As vice dean for centers and programs, Steven David provides
oversight for about 10 centers and programs, including Africana
Studies, Film and
Media Studies, Woman Gender
and Sexuality, and Public
Health Studies, among others. These centers and programs
differ markedly. While some cater mostly to undergraduates (such
as Public Health Studies, now the Krieger School’s second
most popular major, and the Language
Teaching Center), others have a more graduate focus, such
as Women, Gender and Sexuality. All cover territory that falls
between the boundaries of traditional departments and all contribute
mightily to the intellectual offerings of the Krieger School.
In addition to his role as vice dean, David is director of
the Political Science Department’s International
Studies program, the first of its kind in the nation. It
is currently the Krieger School’s most popular major. David
has served as director of the Woodrow
Wilson Undergraduate Fellowship Program since 1998, and as
special assistant to the dean of the Krieger School since 2003.
An expert on international politics and security studies who
is often consulted by members of the media about American foreign
policy in the Middle East, David earned his BA from Union College,
an MA from Stanford, and his PhD from Harvard in 1980. He has
been studying international security and weapons of mass destruction,
terrorism, and military affairs for close to 25 years.
