The Center for Financial Economics:
SUPPORT EDUCATION FOR TOMORROW’S LEADERS
In 2005, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and its Economics Department announced the first phase of its Center for Financial Economics. The idea for the center came in response to two areas: new theoretical and empirical developments in research in the field by the economics profession and the increased demand for training in financial economics by undergraduate and graduate students. The center has two primary goals:
- To create educational programs that prepare students for positions in financial departments of business enterprises, financial institutions, government agencies concerned with financial institutions and markets, and academia.
- To promote research into the role of financial markets, institutions, and policy in the economy.
The center will be unique among economics programs because students will learn the analytical and quantitative skills necessary to be successful in finance, but do so within the framework of an Arts and Sciences education. This rigorous program will train students in complex economic and financial theory, but also give them the communication skills and the facility to share and apply it – the Arts and Sciences edge.
Students of the Center for Financial Economics will be able to pursue a minor, a major, or graduate degree. Coursework includes the following classes:
- Microeconomic Theory
- Probability and Statistics
- Financial Accounting
- Investment and Portfolio Management
- Econometrics
- Corporate Finance
- International Finance
- Financial Econometrics
