Facilities: SUPPORT OUR HERITAGE
Ninety years of students have been inspired by the Georgian the architecture of Gilman Hall, the first academic building on the campus. Alumni often remember fondly the distinctive stairwells, the stained glass windows in the “Hut,” the hall with the beautiful bronze relief of Daniel Coit Gilman, and rooms such as the Donovan Room or the Tudor and Stuart Room. However, there are many more parts of Gilman Hall in need of extensive repair. We want to preserve this building as a space befitting the groundbreaking work of the 21st century’s finest humanities scholars. This renovation will honor the building’s venerable traditions yet introduce modern technology and convenience. In addition, the redesign of Gilman Hall’s interior will provide critical support for Hopkins’ collaborative style of teaching and research. Improvements include the following features:
- New classrooms, seminar rooms, offices, and study areas
- Multimedia-friendly rooms and lecture halls to enhance collaboration
- Wireless internet access
- Enhanced lighting, accessibility, and safety
- Replacement of mechanicals, plumbing, and electrical systems
- Modernization for air-conditioning and heating systems
- Restructuring of the “stacks” in the center of Gilman Hall to give the facility a 36% increase in gathering and study space
