Last fall, more than 600 Homewood sophomores, juniors, and seniors moved into a sparkling new residential complex—don’t call it a dorm—launching a new era of student life at Hopkins, one with boundless opportunities to build and nurture a sense of community, not to mention high-tech laundry machines, music rooms, and a community kitchen worthy of a TV cooking show.
Arts and Sciences spent several days in January tagging along with four sophomore residents of Charles Commons, the new two-building complex along 33rd Street between Charles and St. Paul streets. Close friends and teammates on the Hopkins swim team, they offered glimpses of what it’s like to live in this amenity-packed, decidedly comfy complex.
